Echoic Audio Music Producer / Composer application

Hi Echoic Team,

I’m reaching out to apply for the composer/sound designer role. I’ve followed your work for many years and even interviewed David for my MA research on the creative practise of the Sound Design and Composition industry in 2021, so I was excited to see this job opening.

I’ve written a bit about myself and attached some examples of my work below.

About Me

I’m 28 and I live in South Bristol, where I have been a full-time freelance audio creative for the past 4 years. I’m based in my Stokes Croft studio in from where I work on a variety of projects including film sound design, advert composition and sample pack production.

I’m also the Music Production & DJing tutor at Guildhall Young Artists Taunton, where I teach Logic Pro to classes of students on Saturdays. Alongside this I privately tutor from my studio and online.

Outside of production and teaching, I also co-run event collective VooKoo where I program and promote events, design posters and promotional material and write applications for new events and funding.

Project 1 - time.zip

I composed the music and sound for this project for this London Film School final project. My intention with this piece was to blur the lines between sound design and music together into an immersive soundscape in combination with harder hitting electronic dance elements also featured later on.

Throughout my school years I was always fascinated with production, some of my earliest memories being listening to Daft Punk & The Avalanches in wonder of how their music was made. I started creating my own music on Ableton at the age of 15, a passion which quickly took over my free time, spending many hours trawling through YouTube tutorials and articles online in an effort to understand and replicate the productions I heard.

At school I took my GSCE and A-Level in Music, and later went on to get my Music Technology BA and Sound Design MA at Bath Spa University. My MA research paper was centered around the fusion of sound design and music in film, an intersection I find particularly influential in my own composition work.

Example 2 - Ad Music Reel

I’ve been fortunate to have opportunities to work on music and sound for companies like Google, Ray Ban, Marks & Spencer, Phillips & more. I have always really enjoyed working to briefs because I enjoy finding creative solutions to the specific brand requirements, motivating to create my best work. The often tight deadlines are something I’ve become quite comfortable over the years.

As you can hear from my portfolio, I’ve never stuck to one style or genre and have a wide breadth of musical ability. This has suited me well for the variety of briefs I’ve received over the years, and I feel just as comfortable working on a modern pop style production as I do in an orchestral or cinematic piece. My sample pack production work for BandLab and Splice has also helped me learn new styles quickly.

Project 3 - LONE

This music was composed for a short film for the Straight 8 film event in London. I worked with director Chetna Vaidyanathan who facilitated remote collaborations with instrumentalists in India who I worked with to form the basis of this traditional / electronic fusion piece.

I’m a highly motivated self-starter, and while I have loved being freelance my intention has always been to find a position like this. Given the chance I really believe I’d thrive working for Echoic, and I’d love to bring my expertise and experience to your company.

Thank you for taking the time to read and listen. I’d love to discuss further in person or over a video call.

I hope to hear from you soon!

Kind regards,

Gabriel
